Julia Fiona Roberts is the daughter of Betty Lou Bredemus, and Walter Grady Roberts. She was born on 28 October 1967, in Atlanta. Roberts is part of four generations of the Robertses that reside in the Atlanta area, starting in the family of her grand-father John Pendleton Roberts a farmer. Her father was a young man when he began to take an interest in theater. As an undergraduate at Emory University, he performed on stage in various productions around Atlanta. He joined the Air Force in 1953 and, while working in Biloxi Mississippi was cast in a military production that included Betty Lou Bredemus who was an air force member as well. In 1955, they got married and, in 1956, their son Eric Anthony was born. Walter as well as his spouse left their Air Force service in the year 1957 after which they began enrolment with Walter at Tulane University. Walter worked with Atlanta Academy Theater and Harrington Scenic and Lighting Studio. The family moved in 1960 and moved in Decatur Georgia. Walter and Betty Lou started production in 1964 for the local children's Saturday morning TV show Bum Bum and His Buddies that they funded by themselves. They later founded The Actors and Writers Workshop which ran for six years. They were joined by Lelisa Billingsley (also referred to as Lisa) and Julia (also known as Julie) during this period.
